Ela is originally from Bosnia, but was raised in Boise, Idaho. She graduated from The College of Idaho with a Bachelor’s degree in Spanish Literature and Latin American Studies. In the summer of 2020, she earned her Ph.D. in History from the University of Houston, where she studied the environmental history of Mexico City. Her dissertation combined urban, environmental, and cultural history to understand how different actors have sensed and made sense of air, including its pollution, over time, connecting their insights to cultural landscape formation. As part of her graduate studies, she obtained a minor in Public History, which allowed her to work with Houston-area museums to conduct research on the city’s history. In her spare time, she likes to travel and hike the Boise foothills. She has visited cities across the U.S., Europe, and Mexico, and plans to continue adding more to the list.
